Late Seventeenth Century Blue Dash ‘Oak Leaf’ Charger ; London, c.1690-1700.
This mesmeric English tin glazed charger is perhaps the most unusual of the ‘oak leaf’ group of delftware, on account of its eight pointed star motif in the centre.
Although the design prototype has been attributed to an early Dutch charger; the eight pointed star motif, however, is a symbol from a much earlier Middle Eastern and Islamic culture of tin glaze decoration.
This is ancient Islamic design meets early English decoration; which is fascinating, and very rare to see so boldly in the delft decorators repertoire of the seventeenth century.
The charger has been attributed to Norfolk House, Lambeth, based on similar sherds Garner found during excavations at Lambeth.
Once part of the renowned Louis Lipski collection ; published and illustrated Sotheby’s ‘The Lipski Collection of English and Irish Delftware’ 1981.
