Medieval; Thirteenth Century Wessex School Encaustic Tile Panel.
This medieval encaustic tile panel, with its bold two colour gothic design of stars within a quatrefoil frame, can be attributed to the Wessex school of tilers, and datable to the mid thirteenth century.
Comparable tile designs have been catalogued by Salisbury museum and Elizabeth Eames, who have recorded examples having been found at Clarendon Palace and at Amesbury.
It is of note, that the progressive architect-designer, Edward William Godwin, known for his neo-gothic sensibility, introduced this scarce tile design into his design repertoire.
