Late Sixteenth Century English Needlework
Panel.

This scarce, early needlework of fine silk and wool, is a wonderful example of the decorative pursuits of courtly
Elizabethan women.

The cross stitch panel reveals in beautiful colour, a mythical cockatrice and flying wyvern, amongst over sized marigolds, and foliage. The cockatrice’s beady stare reminding us of their ‘death darting eye’.

Comparable needleworks can be seen in the Christie’s archive sale; ‘ The Mayorcas Collection of Tapestry and Textiles’ - Lot 201.
