Medieval; English Fourteenth Century Kingston Ware Rounded Jug.

This exemplary, mottled green glazed, rounded drinking jug, is typical of the wares being manufactured at Kingston upon Thames during the second half of the Fourteenth century.

Its rounded form is of particular note, being the predecessor to the popular seventeenth century drinking vessel, the so called ‘gorge’.

And, like so many pots of the Middle Ages, the jug exhibits evidence of the potters touch. Three spaced thumbed impressions have been applied around the convex base, like tripod feet, so to stabilise it at the table; an ingenious hallmark of the medieval potter.

The jug retains a noble provenance having been in the collections of Peter Smith of Bojewyan Pottery, Henry Sandon and Johnathan Horne.
