Sixteenth Century English Needlepoint Panel, c.1580.

Inextricabilis error, or rather, the inextricable maze, thus personified by the enigmatic sphinx, depicted in this scarce early needlepoint.

As with many needlepoints of the period, this example is a rendition of a woodcut design, specifically from Claude Paradin’s ‘Heroic Mottos’ of 1557.

Comparable to the embroideries known as the Oxburgh hangings, our needlepoint panel has all the charm and sensibility of the Tudor court.
