Early Eighteenth Century Silk Stomacher; English, c.1700 - 1720.
This ladies stomacher, worked in richly coloured silk and metallic threads, depicts a wonderfully witty display of early fashion design.
The pleasing symmetrical design incorporates an array of flora and fauna. The eye is drawn through the embroidery like a country path, spying birds, a caterpillar, and a bee on a flower disguised in the design.
This is early Georgian fashion perhaps at its most charming.
