Sixteenth Century Cologne Stoneware Gorge, c.1550s

This diminutive early Cologne gorge or mug, bears the applied design of trailing sinuous stems, oak leaves, and acorns - It is thought this design represents the tree of Jesse.

Interestingly, the collar of the gorge is decorated with roses or rosettes, which suggests this was an export piece, destined for the English market.

Archaeological evidence supports the notion of a prosperous trade in these early Cologne wares throughout the sixteenth century, with complete and fragmentary vessels of this type being found across Great Britain.
