Eighteenth Century Indian Chintz Panel In An English Pear Wood Frame.
This painted chintz cotton panel, is a wonderful survivor of the eighteenth century global trade of textiles, between India and Europe.
The fantastical design and colour is quintessentially chintz, and achieved by the use of mordants and natural dyes, applied by pen and brush to the cotton cloth.
These scarce fragments can be found in institutional archives - a comparable example to ours is catalogued in the Smithsonian Design Museum, New York.
