Medieval; Fourteenth Century Parrot Beak Jug; Saintonge.
This so called parrot beak jug, is named on account of the characteristic large spout that the Saintonge potters favoured. Typically vessels for pouring wine, Saintonge jugs became a regular export to medieval Britain, alongside the wine that would be so graciously poured from them.
Mostly discovered in an archaeological context, representation of such jugs in UK museum collections can be found from Norwich to Cardiff, exhibited as tactile symbols of cultural trade of the Middle Ages.
