Early Eighteenth Century English Delft ‘Farm House’ Plate ; Bristol, c.1730.

It would seem this very charming plate fits in nicely with the group of Bristolian delft known as the ‘farm yard’ series.

This type of decoration is characteristic of the early eighteenth century in Bristol ; a composition in manganese, with sponged trees following the curves of the plate, and a central subject usually a peacock or cockerel, but in this case a boldly painted farm house .

Early Bristol decorations really are a tour de force of English folk art from this period ; with this example showcasing the very best from their kilns.
