This scarce, wool and silk tapestry border, displays a profusion of finely woven fruit and flowers, flanking a wolf head, central to the composition - A design that has all the attributes and theatre of the classical world.
The panel was once part of the inventory of the great London textile dealer Joseph Mayorcas.
Mayorcas appropriately quoted about his stock - ‘ we deal in schmutter, but this is the best schmutter…schmutter good enough for museums’.
