Early English Tin-Glazed Gallipot ; London, c.1680-1700.

The so called chain pattern seen around the centre of the gallipot was used throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in England. The pattern has a bold and pleasing fluidity typically associated with the best of these pots.

It is worth mentioning, that although largely used by chemists and apothecaries for storing medicinal substances; gallipots also served as storage for a host of other ingredients too.

Notably, a gallipot with the same pattern was found in a sealed room at Burghley House. It was found to contain dessicated pigments of the sort used by Verrio, Laguerre and Ferraris to paint the murals in the house in the late seventeenth century.

Picture two shows a photograph of similar gallipots from the Wellcome Collection, London - As part of the 1955 exhibition ‘The Story of Pharmacy’.
