Early Silk Pocketbook; c.1700-1720, English.
This early eighteenth century pocketbook, with its design of oversized silk bouquets, and metallic thread urns, is an object of luxury, and great delicacy.
A place where one could contain one’s money, shopping list, and perhaps love letters, these early accessories were both practical and fashionable.
The tradition of decorative pocketbooks is one that saw manufacturers in Europe, Britain and America, all contribute.
Ours, with its charming spray of strawberries, is a motif more often attributed to the English designers of this early period.
