Late Sixteenth Century English Needlework Slip Panel; c1580 - 1600.

This Elizabethan cross stitch design, with its flowers against undulating tussocks, is expertly worked with a blend of coloured silk, and outlined in rope twist silver thread.

The botanic floral subjects are perhaps simplified renditions from Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues book of woodcuts ‘La clef des champs’. A book that contained images of flowers found in English gardens; and much referenced for needlework design during the late Tudor period.
