Seventeenth Century English Tin-Glazed Gallipot, London, c1680.

This early gallipot or apothecary jar is decorated in the so called chain pattern. The treatment of this particular example has a pleasing calligraphic touch to the design.

What is unusual however, is the pot has taken on a patina from being historically exposed to a long period in a river - The glaze which we think was a manganese has transformed into inky pastel black, which serendipitously compliments this calligraphic design.
