Early Italian Silk Assisi Embroidery, c1600.
Early Italian Silk Assisi Embroidery, c1600.
This fine and rare silk embroidery is typically classed as Assisi work. The distinctive technique is characterised by a voided design, contrasted with tight mesh like stitches, giving a superb graphic embellishment to borders of linen cloth.
As in this example, a rich, natural dye of crushed carmine, or indeed cochineal, is used to achieve this ruby like hue - which is typically chosen by the embroiders of this work, no doubt for its luxurious finish.
It is of note, these assisi embroideries of the late sixteenth century and into the beginning of the seventeenth century, were highly coveted by the Elizabethan court for their bold elegance and unrivalled technique - this design of acorns and oak leaves being particularly en vogue.
Housed in a period silvered frame.
