Fifteenth Century Stained Glass Shield Panel; France, c.1450 - 1500.

This early panel of stained glass, with its heraldic sensibility, lays out silvery addorsed fish, upon an ultra marine shield form.

A number of European families of the Middle Ages lay claim to similar armourial devices, as for this example, we are uncertain of its heraldic identity. However, we can read the fish as symbols of abundance, prosperity, and perhaps a link with Christian and maritime realms.
