Medieval; Fourteenth Century Inlaid Floor Tile; Northern France.

This striking two colour floor tile incorporates a quatrefoil format, depicting serrated leaf motifs, with circular and arrow decorative accents.

The tile design is one that was popularised in France, with noticeable nuances through the thirteenth and fourteenth century, which also filtered down to the English tile repertoire.

A large pavement at the monastic site of Saint-Martin-d’Hardinghem exhibits this design in abundance, which is nothing short of remarkable. Here, tile panels can also be observed on a diagonal, so the design suggests the form of the cross - Blessed are the tile makers.
