A Thirteenth Century English Encaustic Tile; Wessex School.

This large Wessex encaustic tile, with its splendid gothic ornament, is a design that can be attributed to a number of medieval sites across the West Country.

Our examples provenance concerns the market town of Bruton in Somerset; appropriately once the site of a large Augustinian priory, later becoming Bruton abbey.
Subsequently demolished after the dissolution; only a church, abbey wall ruin, and a dovecote survive of the monastic buildings.
