Medieval; Late Thirteenth Century Jug, Paris.
Medieval; Late Thirteenth Century Jug, Paris.
This burnt sienna glazed earthenware jug from the Middle Ages is quintessentially Parisian. Notably the form of the jug and handle, and decoratively, the hatched rouletted appliqué and prunts; motifs favoured by the potters of Paris.
It is worth noting this à la mode roulette design went on to inspire potters in England. A number of parallels can be made with English wares of the fourteenth century.
