Seventeenth Century Westerwald Stoneware Apothecary Jar, c.1680.

Seventeenth Century Westerwald Stoneware Apothecary Jar, c.1680.

Classified in the German tongue as a ‘kruke’; these early stoneware hexagonal forms are known to be used as drug jars.

Elaborately decorated in true westerwald style of the 1680s, the jar reads like a carousel of panels depicting large floral motifs, each with a medallion depicting fashionable duellist’s crossing swords.

Such a motif, appealing to aristocratic sensibilities and ownership, suggests this jar would have belonged to a private apothecary.
