Seventeenth Century Westerwald Pilgrim Costrel, c.1660- 1680.

Pilgrim costrel’s of this form, with their globular body, and long slender neck, emerged from Europe during the seventeenth century.

It is the potters at Westerwald that particularly favoured this form, glazing with the characteristic jewel like cobalt and manganese, and in this case, emblazoned with debossed fleur de lis.

Examples such as this one were probably made for the French market, which saw a revitalisation of older shrines and the emergence of new, during the seventeenth century.
