Medieval; Fourteenth Century Inlaid Floor Tile, Northern France.
This so called ‘Vair ancien’ design is a wonderfully ambiguous motif, found within the language of heraldry, and indeed, is actually a representation of squirrel fur.
The tiles distinguished cream slip and moss green glaze, is typical of the of the Pas de Calais region, and paired with the sinuous lines of the Vair design is most effective.
Such tile designs might be used singularly to break up other designs or laid in large repetitive panels.
