Medieval; Fourteenth Century Inlaid Floor Tile; France.

This scarce inlaid floor tile, depicting a coltish bear armed with a club and shield, framed by bold geometric corner motifs, appears to give a nod to the heraldic world.

However, the bears role in the art of the Middle Ages, is more often illustrated in bestiaries, where they are known also to manifest Christian symbolism.

Here the tradition of heraldry and bestiary, seemingly cross-over in this intriguing tile design.
