Eighteenth Century Gaming Purse; French, c.1700.
Gaming purses are the lady aristo’s choice to conceal their coins and tokens at the court gaming tables of the eighteenth century.
This green silk velvet example, with its constellation of silver metallic stitches, acorn toggles, and lucky star motif to base, is modestly adorned in comparison to other examples of the period.
It is thought that such modestly decorated gaming purses were designed intentionally, so to deceive other players in to thinking its owner had little money; a ‘poker faced’ purse, so to speak.
