Seventeenth Century Stoneware Gorge with House Mark ; Frechen, c.1600.

Typically seen on the facade of sixteenth and seventeenth century Rhenish buildings as a mark of property and to signify a family home, house marks are also found adorning ceramics of the period, such as this stoneware gorge.

The combination of runic like devices within a shield ; surrounded by scrolls and stylised crown makes this medallion rather elaborate, suggesting some status.

However, house marks and merchant marks on early stoneware are largely unexplored and this particular example is yet to be identified.
