English Medieval Jug ; Fourteenth Century, East Anglian, Grimston, Norfolk.

£2,450.00

English Medieval Jug ; Fourteenth Century, East Anglian, Probably Grimston, Norfolk.

The rarified group of antiquities that is Medieval English pottery is somewhat of the holy grail for modern connoisseurs of early ceramics ; praised for its human touch, noble aesthetics, and zen like state.

This exemplary fourteenth century jug with its simple carafe type form and rich moss green glaze is indicative of an East Anglian manufacturer, and probably the work of the potters at Grimston, Norfolk ; here the legendary kiln site ‘Pott Row’ is known to of produced such domestic wares that were distributed throughout East Anglia.

Interestingly the jug was found in Norfolk c.1937 during deep excavations at the site that Norwich city hall was being built on. Two other almost identical jugs are known in UK Museum exhibits, one at Kings Lynn, Norfolk, and the second at the Fitzwilliam, Cambridge ; both catalogued with East Anglian and Grimston attributions.
