Medieval; Sacred Monogram Impressed Floor Tile; Fifteenth Century, Nottingham.
We are quite certain that this tile would have belonged to a group of similar tiles once in-situ at Maxstoke Priory and manufactured by the Nottingham school of tilers; who provided floor tiles all across the midlands with their distinctive style during the late medieval period.
The sacred monogram of Jesus Christ is recognised on this tile by the ornamental script ‘ IHC ‘ - It is clearly a devotional tile and an object imbued with holiness.
One other example of this design, also from Maxstoke priory is known, and catalogued in the British Museum by Elizabeth Eames.
Formerly with Johnathan Horne.
