A Very Rare English Delftware Mugg; Early Eighteenth Century, Bristol.
A Very Rare English Delftware Mugg; Early Eighteenth Century, Bristol.
This small delftware mug with its decoration of trellis work and crosses in blue and white is undeniably a thing of charm - and indeed a rarity in the delftware decorators repertoire.
Fragments of this pattern have been found at London, Bristol, and US sites, including Williamsburg, Virginia. A known comparable larger mug in polychrome inscribed ‘union’ is datable to around 1707 - 1710. See the Longridge Collection of English Slipware & Delftware; Leslie B. Grigsby.
