Medieval; Late Thirteenth Century Baluster Jug; Lyonnais, France.
Medieval; Late Thirteenth Century Baluster Jug; Lyonnais, France.
This nice and early baluster jug is a quintessential example of medieval domestic tableware.
Of good size and remarkable condition; the jug is elevated by its decoration of applied vertical rouletted strips - this type being a hallmark of the Lyonnaise potters.
In true antiquarian fashion there remains a nineteenth century collectors label, applied seemingly as if part of the jugs design; the elegant inscription states an attribution to Montepensier and the thirteenth century.
This historic attribution would seem correct; the jug indeed displays all the characteristics of what one would expect of this period and geography - Bravo to the Montepensier antiquarian.
