Late Eighteenth Century Slipware Baluster Jug; Dated & Initialled; DR 1799. Ewenny, Wales.

£4,950.00

Late Eighteenth Century Slipware Baluster Jug; Dated & Initialled; DR 1799. Attributed to Ewenny, Wales.

This charming baluster jug sits nicely amongst the slipware’s known as Harvest jugs, usually associated with North Devon; however, an attribution to Ewenny in Wales would seem more fitting.

We can find a direct comparable jug dated 1784 in the Museum of Wales; St Fagans Gweithdy gallery. The jug firmly attributed to Ewenny, shares much in common with ours, which is likely to be from the same workshop and perhaps by the same hand.

Decorated in an idiosyncratic manner with applied slip motifs, depicting a tree of life, oversized tulips, flanked either side by birds with toes that turn to leaves; the design is finished with a flurry of sgraffito lines and dots, highlighting details that include the initials DR and date 1799.

The decorative schemes of British folk slipware’s are an incomparable art of the early modern period - this 1799 example showcasing one of the best of its kind.
