A Very Rare Eighteenth Century English Delftware Plate; Bristol, c.1740.
Eighteenth Century English Delftware Plate Depicting a Smoking Bottle Kiln; Bristol, c.1740.
Perhaps the most evocative of all the eighteenth century English tin-glazed decorations; this beautiful, naive depiction of a smoking bottle kiln radiates a magical moment.
There is something paramount in the potter depicting the engine of their trade on an article of pottery - here we have the potters temple in all its glory, which has the potential to create alchemy, art, and fortune.
The decoration of bottle kilns in polychrome tin-glaze are of great rarity, enhancing this examples significance and beauty.
The plate is thought to depict a Bristol bottle kiln and perhaps the very kiln the plate was fired in.
For a comparable plate see the Colonial Williamsburg Collection, US.
Provenance; Formerly with Gary Atkins 1994 and then with the Graham Slater Collection.
