Eighteenth Century English Delftware Punch Bowl; Inscribed ‘Success to y Duke’

Eighteenth Century English Delftware Punch Bowl Inscribed ‘Success to y Duke’
Probably London, perhaps Liverpool, c.1746.

A significant example of commemorative English Delftware belonging to a group of bowls concerning the Jacobite uprising and the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie at the battle of Culloden by the Duke of Cumberland; ( Prince William Augustus, son of King George II of England )

There are five known bowls including this one recorded that share the classical male bust with a laurel wreath central to the interior of the bowl; each with an inscription commemorating England’s victory over the Jacobite army at Culloden in 1746.

Our bowls inscription ‘Success to y duke’ evidently celebrates the Duke of Cumberlands victory which saved the Hanover sovereignty from the young pretender.

The punch bowl with its central bold imperator design, perhaps the Duke of Cumberland himself, is an iconic reminder of one the most important battles fought in the history of the British Isles.
