Early English Silk Embroidered Floral Picture, c.1700.
Early English Silk Embroidered Floral Picture, c.1700.
A delightfully theatrical composition depicting flowering stems and seed pods on a grassy hillock; skilfully worked in dyed silk and metallic threads on a silk satin ground.
Interestingly, the embroidered design appears to mimic the tree of life motif, incorporating stylised flowers and foliage, influenced by the imported Indian chintzes of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
A wonderfully accomplished and culturally rich early embroidery.
