Sixteenth Century Bartmann Jug with Silver Cover; Cologne, Maximinenstrasse Workshop, c.1520-1540.
Early Sixteenth Century Bartmann Jug with Silver Cover; Cologne, Probably Maximinenstrasse Workshop, c.1520 - 1540.
The oldest on the Bartmann family tree; these early Rhenish types can be recognised by a design of sinuous branches, oak leaves and acorns - A decorative scheme typical of the Maximinenstrasse workshop of Cologne and adapted from German renaissance woodcut prints from precisely this period.
Graced with an elaborate domed silver cover incorporating a figural element of the infant Bacchus; the jug makes a further nod to the European renaissance taste, and perhaps to the enjoyment of drinking fine Riesling wines.
Bartmann jugs such as this Maximinenstrasse type, although represented in leading international museums, are seldom seen on the current art market. Naturally, we’re delighted to have added it to our inventory.
