Seventeenth Century Bartmann Jug; Dated 1603.
Seventeenth Century Bartmann Jug; Dated 1603.
This fine example with its pleasing globular and squat form bears a rather significant and early seventeenth century date.
Above the coat of arms the jug is clearly dated 1603; a significant year for the English monarchy with James I ascended to the throne after the death of Elizabeth I.
With the importation of these fashionable Rhenish jugs into England at this period so buoyant, one would think the date perhaps a nod to the new king of England.
A similar 1603 dated Bartmann is part of the Frank Thomas bequest of German Stoneware at the British Museum.
