Medieval; Fourteenth Century Inlaid Tile; Arms of Holcroft or Uphill Family; Wessex School.
This wonderful inlaid floor tile is part of a group of scarce Wessex school tiles depicting British heraldic arms. These designs date to the early fourteenth century and are characterised by the large central shield motif.
The arms attributed to the Holcroft or Uphill family both have West Country origins, which ties in nicely with the tiles provenance, having been found in the garden of the old school house, Exton, Somerset.
It is believed the tile was once in-situ at Exton’s local church; St Peter’s, where three similar tiles have been relaid on the chancel step.
