Medieval; Fifteenth Century English Floor Tile; Inscribed; Deo Gracias.
This striking large encaustic tile was once part of a fine sixteen piece decorative pavement panel from the Dominican priory, the Blackfriars, Gloucester.
A quarter of a Tudor rose is surrounded by a quarter circle with the poignant inscription ‘Deo Gracias’ or ‘thanks be to God’. Believed to be a special commission for the priory; the design and workmanship of these Blackfriars tiles is exceptional.
Archaeological excavations at the Blackfriars took place between 1966 - 1969; subsequently discovering the pavement tiles; during which time our tile was presented to the medieval tile scholar Elizabeth Eames.
