Early English Crewelwork ; Lion & Leopard Under The Tree of Life ; circa 1680 - 1700.

Early English Crewelwork ; Lion & Leopard Under The Tree of Life ; circa 1680 - 1700.

This wild and original composition is a wonderful example of the imaginative use of popular embroidery motifs of the period. Depicted are the lion and leopard typically seen on silk stumpworks underneath the favoured motif seen on crewelwork, the so-called tree of life ; an inspired choice by the embroider, working to great affect in composition and symbolism.

Unusually, the format size and cut of the linen ground indicates this piece had been made to be a chair seat cover ; furthermore, evidence of interesting repairs contemporary to the embroidery can be seen at the top corners, showing where the back supports of the chair would of rested.

A beautiful and rare survivor.
